Jerry Quarry was a human punching bag for the greatest fighters in professional boxing in the 1970s. He was admired because of his alleged cement jaw, and he took a long time to hit the canvas, if at all.
Worse, Quarry continued to fight despite his advanced age and growing health problems, and quite frankly, it was ugly. The cumulative damage on his brain was significant. This continued fighting had serious health effects on Quarry, and within a few years he couldn’t even dress himself, and he had to be cared for by family members.
Quarry passed away on Jan. 3, 1999, and it was one of the saddest days in sports history.
