Whoopi Goldberg was born Caryn Elaine Johnson on Nov. 13, 1955 in the Chelsea section of Manhattan, one of the five boroughs that make up New York City. Being born and raised in the American epicenter of theater, Whoopi Goldberg began acting at age 8 in experimental theater, and went on to perform on Broadway.
