It seemed like the world stopped when Frank Ocean revealed that his first love was a man, and since then the singer has received a flood of praise and criticism for his revelation. And it appeared that music legend Stevie Wonder had jumped on the praise bandwagon as well when he serenaded Ocean with his own version of “No Church In The Wild” upon meeting at a party recently. However, Wonder’s adoration came into question last week when he made some shocking comments about Ocean’s bisexuality.
“I think honestly, some people who think they’re gay, they’re confused. People can misconstrue closeness for love. People can feel connected, they bond. I’m not saying all [gay people are confused]. Some people have a desire to be with the same sex. But that’s them.” said Wonder in an interview with The Guardian.
His statements led to bit of confusion and backlash from fans about Wonder’s stance on homosexuality and bisexuality. But Wonder recently sent a statement to MTV News, clarifying his previous statements and advocating for love among all sexes.
“I’m sorry that my words about anyone feeling confused about their love were misunderstood. No one has been a greater advocate for the power of love in this world than I; both in my life and in my music. Clearly, love is love, between a man and a woman, a woman and a man, a woman and a woman and a man and a man. What I’m not confused about is the world needing much more love, no hate, no prejudice, no bigotry and more unity, peace and understanding. Period,” said Wonder.
And there’s just no questioning that kind of comment. We commend Wonder for clarifying his stance on love and sexuality and below are some other stars who’ve shared supportive words for Ocean and equality for the LGBT community. – nicholas robinson
