The Obama campaign announced on Monday that it has received 10,000,000 contributions, setting a new record in modern politics.
“Last night, this campaign reached 10,000,000 donations in 2012; a huge milestone and an historic record for grassroots politics,” wrote President Obama via Twitter Monday morning.
Equally impressive in an era of mega donors and super pacs, the campaign has raised nearly half of its money from contributors giving less than $200, according to financial disclosures. Obama has pulled in $189 million from small donors, while Romney has received only $46.7 million.
Campaign officials said Obama has eclipsed his 2008 total in donations, due in part to new technologies including the ability to contribute via text message.
Obama for America, the official campaign committee, had raised $157 million more than Romney by the end of August. However, the RNC’s war chest, reaching $76.6 million at the end of August, is ten times the size of the DNC’s, which reported just $7.1 million cash on hand.
Recent polls show President Obama leading in swing states following the Democratic National Convention and a series of missteps made by the Romney campaign. Among them, a video of a private donor event was released, showing Romney saying 47 percent of Americans support the president because they are “dependent on government.”
The first in a series of presidential debates airs Wednesday, Oct. 3 from 9:00-10:30 p.m. EDT.
