Melba Moore at the Atlanta Black Theatre Festival

Toni Simmons Henson, founder and executive director of the Atlanta Black Theatre Festival brings the celebration back to the city over the Oct. 4-. 7 weekend. The event showcases a variety of provocative productions from a host of talented performers known around the world. Melba Moore, Shirley Murdock and Daryl “Chill” Mitchell will be among the 200 performers from 18 states to perform 40 plays in four days.

Whether you are a fan of traditional black theatre such as August Wilson, or urban contemporary such as Tyler Perry, there is sure to be something to satisfy your entertainment palate at this festival” says Henson. The plays will be held at the Woodruff Art Center’s14th Street Playhouse at 173 14th St. NE, Atlanta, GA 30309

In addition, there are lots of family friendly events including workshops for kids and a youth showcase featuring a selection of musicians, dancers, actors and playwrights from the Atlanta area, all under the age of 21.


There will also be book signings, lectures and discussions with area authors and staged readings from several emerging playwrights. All of these activities are free and being held at the luxurious Loews Hotel located at 1065 Peachtree St. NE, Atlanta, Ga 30309. No registration is required. You can also enjoy music at the Loews Hotel during the festival weekend.
