Sunday Program: Are You Ashamed to Express Your Religion in the Workplace?

Tokyo Brown (Facebook)

I like seeing who people really are. I’m from an Islamic background, and it’s amazing what people say and think about Muslims when they think none are around (especially post 9/11). Also, it’s interesting that non-muslims love to keep muslims in check by what they THINK they know about Islam. It’s funny to me that when I did wear my hijab (head scarf) I would have people telling me, “you’re not suppose to be dating … you’re not suppose to be eating that … you’re not suppose to say that … you can’t go to that Christmas/Halloween/Easter function etc.– Aren’t you MUSLIM!?”

It’s something I mostly hear from Christians, and it’s funny to me because a lot of the things they call out are also things in their holy books too. So to answer the question, I don’t necessarily HIDE my religion, but I do let people form their opinions of me BEFORE they know what I believe. I am an individual, and I am human. I like to have fun, I joke, curse, be sexy, push envelopes, step outside the norms, have opinions, like any other 29 year old. While my religion does guide me, I don’t represent all muslims. However, when I do put on a scarf people don’t see me, they see what I “supposedly” represent and I don’t like that.
