Lance Armstrong Leaves Livestrong, Loses Endorsement
After being stripped of his Tour de France medals after a doping scandal, Lance Armstrong is seeing even more fallout from the controversy.
Armstrong, 41, announced on Oct. 17 that he will step down from his Livestrong cancer-fighting charity. “To spare the foundation any negative effects as a result of controversy surrounding my cycling career, I will conclude my chairmanship,” said Armstrong in a statement released to the press.
Additionally, reps for Nike confirmed that they have canceled their contract with the cyclist. “Due to the seemingly insurmountable evidence that Lance Armstrong participated in doping and misled Nike for more than a decade, it is with great sadness that we have terminated our contract with him,” the company said.
Just last week the United States Anti-Doping Agency released a lengthy report stating that Armstrong had direct involvement in “the most sophisticated, professionalized and successful doping program that sport has ever seen.” A number of his teammates also confirmed his use of illegal substances. Armstrong has been banned from cycling for life.
