Dr. Reagan Flowers and the Honorable Sylvester Turner held a Welcome to Houston Reception at Americas in Houston’s Historical Heights District on Nov. 15. Dr. Flowers introduced Porter as the recently appointed manager for the Houston Astros. “Bo Porter and I met 10 or 15 years ago at his urban hitter’s baseball camp for children. I was contacted to come in as a guidance counselor to help educate them, prepare and propel them to take their learning into their hands and not just focus on baseball, but focus equally on the academic side of what it takes in case baseball doesn’t come through in the form of a professional career. That’s the kind of person Bo is. The kind of person that reaches out to the community and its youth. We are so lucky to have him here in Houston” said Dr. Flowers.
As Porter addressed the attendants he discussed his plans for the Houston Astros and the changes that are taking place in the Major League. “I thank all of the Astros fans who have remained loyal, but the reason Jim Crane, Bo Porter and Jeff Luhnow ended up together is because we were all on the same page and agreed that you can’t buy championships. The Houston Astros have had a long history of trading their young talent and signing pricey veterans that lead to a team that does not balance itself. We have decided as an organization that we are going to focus on the draft and young prospects. We recently traded our major league assets and we took the top prospects from every organization that we could make a trade with. Last year we were ranked number thirty out of thirty teams in major league baseball and in one year we went from thirty to number eleven. My goal is to win a championship and that will be our goal every year from here on out. We will not show up for spring training with any other goal in mind. I’m ready to be a Houstonian and I am here to make this team work.”
Guests mixed and mingled as journalist Kim Davis closed out the evening with an in-depth question and answer discussion with Porter and other participants, and recognized both he and Dr. Flowers for their work with the youth in the community.
