Dawn Richard: The Diddy-Dirty Money Star Spreads Her Wings as a Solo Artist

But, there were times when you thought that people had your back and they didn’t, right?
Sure. There are times when people didn’t, but for some reason I’ve been really lucky with the people around me, and usually my core has remained tight. When that has happened in the past, it happens for about 17 minutes and then we start to see the dry reality … then the rest happens and I have to say “goodbye.” Again, that’s why I keep it [at] five. People can join, but I keep it tight because there’s a lot to be lost here. We’ve worked extremely hard to gain the respect and the quality of sound that we have, and I just wouldn’t want anyone to mess that up.

Give us your elevator pitch on why we need to be some of the first people getting this album when it comes out?
I don’t have a pitch. If you want something different, buy it … it’s not even mad deep, it’s good music. I’m not here to sell you an idea; I’m here to give you good music. Now, whether or not you want to buy it, it’s up to you. I personally think that people want something new …  I’m just some of that new s— — it’s that simple. I think people are tired of being sold an idea or being told to do something. I want them to figure it out for themselves. I want them to see this, hear it, buy it, check it out online, and then make their own decision about whether or not they like it. If you like great music, I think you should buy this album. I’m just doing what I can do to make this message the best it can be, but I’m not here to pitch you anything …
