Hughes gained the reputation as one of the nation’s most amazing psychics, after she had been accurate in numerous Kennedy family tragedies.
Hughes accurately predicted the deaths of both John F. Kennedy and his brother, Robert Kennedy, in her newspaper column before their assassinations, and in a radio interview, she predicted Ted Kennedy’s car accident “near water” that would kill his companion. In that interview, she said that Kennedy would not be harmed in the accident.
On July 19, 1969, Ted Kennedy drove his car off a bridge; Kennedy was not injured, but his companion, Mary Jo Kopechne, was killed.
