On the same day that “All Gold Everything” rapper Trinidad James made headlines after it was announced as the latest Def Jam Recordings signee, another Def Jam rapper who was being touted as the “Next Big Thing” a few years back was complaining about his experiences with major labels.
Asher Roth was riding high off the success of his single “I Love College” back in 2009, and after signing with Universal/Motown, he released his debut album, Asleep In the Bread Aisle. Unfortunately for Roth, his debut was a dud and he soon found himself switching from Universal/Motown to the aforementioned Def Jam.
But the move hasn’t worked out for Roth. His sophomore album has yet to be released and he complained in a recent interview with Bootleg Kev about his experiences with huge labels.
“To me, when I first came, everything happened so fast, I was too dependent to a fault,” he continued. “Being on a major label – unless you’re activated and you’re like – if you’re Rihanna [or] Justin Bieber, you’re good, you have all the resources in the world. But otherwise, you’re independent.”
Sounds like Asher’s career may be in jeopardy, here are 10 other acts who signed who’s major signings yielded minor results…
