Kelis was one of the more interesting and innovative female artists in the early 2000s. She cut a clear path for the Lady Gagas and Rihannas to follow years later; but motherhood and a high-profile divorce seemed to push music to the background. By the time she dropped 2010’s terrible Flesh Tone, she sounded more like she was following the artists she’d influenced. She promises a “90s, trip-hop vibe…” on her next project. Here’s hoping she sounds inspired, at least.
