Swartz was an internet wizard, and supporter of a free and accessible web information for all, and in that vein he founded Reddit and was also an accomplished hacker, or, hacktivist.
In July of 2011, Swartz was found guilty of illegally accessing millions of documents on the subscription-based online academic digital library JSTOR, and at least 5 million documents from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, (MIT).
Swartz turned over his hard drives and JSTOR did not pursue further litigation, but MIT as well as the Massachusetts State Attorney’s office aggressively went after him, according to Swartz’s friends and family.
