In November 2012, Forbes magazine calculated Isabel dos Santos’s net worth at $500 million. Well, things have changed. This week, they’ve declared Santos Africa’s first female billionaire. The 40-year-old wife and mother of three is a resident of Luando, Angola (southern Africa) and is the oldest daughter of its president, José Eduardo dos Santos – the continent’s second longest-serving leader at 33 years – and his first wife, Tatiana Kukanova.
While critics are dismissing Santos’ rise as a direct result of being a beneficiary of her family’s “inner circle”, the King’s College (London) graduate is enjoying a fortune amassed via investments in publicly traded companies in Portugal.
At age 24, she opened her first restaurant in Luanda and named it Miami Beach.
