YG discusses L.A. gang culture and new mixtape

The West Coast has recently experienced a resurgence in hip-hop. After ruling the charts in the ’90s, rappers from the Los Angeles area are causing the music world to pay attention, again. YG is one of the young rappers who represents the next generation of L.A.-based emcees.

With the release of his new mixtape Just Re’d Up 2,  YG is preparing to take things to the next level.

What can fans expect from the new mixtape ‘Just Re’d Up 2’?

This one will be a classic. It features Young Jeezy, Wiz Khalifa, Nipsey Hussle, Juicy J and others. It’s a lot of good records. You can play it from start to finish. We will drop six videos to give the album a real strong push.

Why has there been a recent resurgence in West Coast rap?

It’s a bunch of young hungry rappers in L.A. They are setting up businesses. They are going on tour and doing movies. We’re brining it back to the west coast with new rappers who want it.

Most of the nation was introduced to L.A.’s gang scene through hip-hop. Does the gang lifestyle still remain prominent in the city?

The gang scene is still a big culture out here. We’re known for gang banging and people are still being caught up in it everyday. But the older homies tell us that it’s not as violent as it used to be. When it comes to music and getting money, we are all in it together. We want the young dudes to know that it’s ok to work with someone who doesn’t rep your gang. It’s all about making it happen.

What else can we expect in 2013?

The album will be coming out 2013. It’s all about the support we get on the mixtape. For now, we’re setting up a tour to take it nationwide.
