Zombies don’t think, don’t bleed or have remorse. They only do one thing: Prey on living human flesh. So when R (Nicholas Hoult) comes to Julie’s (Teresa Palmer) defense against the corpses in his community, you know this is not going to be an ordinary zombie flick. R seems to be undergoing a metamorphosis as he realizes that he’s lonely and he doesn’t want to be, well, a bloodsucking cadaver. Now he just needs to convince Julie’s dad (John Malkovich) that he’s different from all the others corpses staggering around in the hunt for their next warm meal. –p.d. lee
