Black History Month: 5 forgotten moguls of black music

Jheryl Busby

Greatest success: MCA Records/Motown Records

Busby began his career working in West Coast promotion and marketing for Stax Records. In the mid-1980s, he was hired at MCA Records to build it’s black music division. He would go on to sign Jody Watley, New Edition and the Jets, while guiding veteran star Patti LaBelle’s ’80s resurgence. He would take over Motown after Berry Gordy sold the label to MCA, and led the world-famous music brand into the 1990s, signing acts like The Boys, Queen Latifah, Johnny Gill and Boyz II Men.
