It’s Academy Award season, and as most cinephiles will spend Oscar night debating about who was best dressed, which actors deserved their awards and which films were snubbed, the musical side of the film industry’s biggest night sometimes gets less scrutiny.
The songs that fuel the movies can be as much a part of the cinematic experience as the riveting performances of the actors, and the methods in which directors utilize those songs are often evidence of their genius as filmmakers. But for every “Chariots of Fire” or “It’s Hard Out Here For A Pimp” (yes, never forget that Oscar moment), there are several other classic movie songs that didn’t even garner a nomination.
