WNBA's Chamique Holdsclaw facing life in prison

Holdsclaw, a four-time All-American and three-time national champion under legendary coach Pat Summit in Tennessee, has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault, one count of criminal damage in the first degree, two counts of criminal damage in the second degree, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, according to tmz.com.

If convicted on all charges, Holdsclaw, 35, could be sent to prison for up to 65 years, which would pretty much be a death sentence.

According to police and media reports, Holdsclaw stalked her former girlfriend and former teammate Jennifer Lacy in Atlanta, following Lacy towards her home. When Lacy detected that she was being followed, she detoured towards another friend’s home in order to seek safety. After Lacy pulled up at the house and while she was still in the car, Holdsclaw takes a baseball bat and bashes in one of her car windows and then fires a handgun into the car while Lacy was still in the driver’s seat. Holdsclaw then fled the scene and was in hiding for a short time.

After a short local manhunt, Holdsclaw was placed into custody after she turned herself in at an Atlanta police station.

Holdsclaw has a history of mental illness and quit the Women’s National Basktball Association at least twice to deal with deep depression and other related issues. Holdsclaw had joined the Atlanta Dream a few years back before she quit the team and the game without notice and without much explanation.

Holdsclaw and Lacy were teammates on the Atlanta Dream squad during the 2009 season.
