Black Thought working on a blues album: the 10 best rappers-turned-singers

Famed rhymer Black Thought of The Roots is prepping a blues album. The acclaimed frontman spoke to TheUberUrban about his plans to release a project that emphasizes his singing. While still committed to his ‘day job’ with the Roots and on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon,” Thought has recruited a cadre of acclaimed singer-songwriters to help him fully realize his vision.

“I just started writing a couple of weeks ago for a blues album kinda that I’m going to be singing on. I don’t know what it’s gonna be called, but it might be called The Talented Mr. Trotter,” Black Thought revealed.

“And I’ve been writing with Raheem DeVaughn and my friend Ray Angry. Imma be in the studio this week writing with my friend Tunde from a band called TV On The Radio,” Thought shared. “Imma be doing some stuff with Jim James from My Morning Jacket. Just some stuff that I feel like I need to get out that is kind of aside from the new Roots record.”

The Roots as a band have always been willing to push themselves artistically — even outside the paradigm of hip-hop. And Black Thought isn’t the first emcee who decided he wanted to give singing a try.

Here are 10 of the best rappers who became-singers …
