Chamique Holdsclaw’s ex-teammate and ex-lover Jennifer Lacy, by most accounts, lived a charmed but low key life in the Women’s National Basketball Association — that is, until that fateful day in November in Atlanta.
That day, Holdsclaw walked into a place where Lacy worked and asked to put something in her car. When Lacy was driving home, she noticed her car was smoking and that Holdsclaw was following her.
What happened next threatens to put Holdsclaw, 35, in prison for up to 65 years. When Lacy tried to flee to a friend’s home to seek safety and call police, Holdsclaw took a baseball bat and bashed in several of her car windows before brandishing a semi-automatic handgun and firing a shot into the vehicle while Lacy was still in the passenger seat.
Lacy escaped physically unscathed but her emotional wounds may take years to heal.
But who is Jennifer Lacy?
Lacy, 29, is the daughter of Major League Baseball player Lee Lacy and was raised in Augora Hills, Calif., one of the large cluster of prosperous suburbs of Los Angeles. After graduating from Augora Hills High School, Lacy played college ball at prestigious Pepperdine University, spurning recruitment offers from other elite schools including the University of California-Berkeley (Cal) and UC Santa Barbara.
Lacy and Holdsclaw were teammates for the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream during the 2009 season. The 6-foot-3, 191-pound Lacy completed her sixth WNBA season in the summer of 2012, where she averaged just under 9 points and 3 rebounds per game.
