The group became the new-age version of The Jackson 5 during the ’80s. The Boston-bred singers were one of the few groups to actually grow up without losing most of their fans. They were middle school sensations during their “Candy Girl” days; “Mr. Telephone Man” was relatable to their high school fans; and “If It Isn’t Love” showed their growth as a group and was a big hit with college-aged students and young adults. The group also spawned acts such as Bobby Brown (the “King of R & B” during the early ’90s); BBD (creators of “Poison”) and Ralph Tresvant (“Sensitivity”).
