Clair believes that there is an under-served audience of hip-hop fans specifically and music fans in general who don’t necessarily care as much about beefs and sex scandals. “I think the average music lover that wants to know more about the music has to really dig to find a good source [or] good information or at least a decent interview that doesn’t have the high school bulls–t,” Clair explains. “I was watching an interview on the Web and it was 25 minutes with Raekwon — one of the greatest of all time — talking about beefs! And I was like ‘C’mon, man — we’re not 12!’ This cat is old enough to be somebody’s grandfather and all you’re asking him about is beef? I’m addicted to it and I tune it like everybody else, but I wish it was a bit more grown.”
Clair has remained a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to his career. He’s hosted a radio show, produces and raps, and still does the stand-up comedy that he’s renowned for. “If you go back and talk to my high school teachers, I was supposed to have been done a long time ago,” he shares matter-of-factly. “This is all just like … the journey. They say you’re supposed to enjoy the journey. Man, I’ve had so much fun and such an incredible life and the things that I asked for as a kid happened. That was mind-blowing — and I’ve been able to sustain it for 20 years!”
And while he still has work to do, Joe Clair is determined to have fun while doing it. “Joe Clair is coming back and doing what he does best — which is giving you a good interview on a number of subjects. It reflects us on the real,” he says, before adding, “Plus, I’m a handsome black man — so g’head and check me out for that anyway!”
