Controversial teenage rapper Chief Keef is a free man.
The 17-year-old was released from a juvenile detention center on March 14 after serving 60 days for violating his probation. The hip-hop star quickly announced his release via Twitter, thanking his fans for supporting him through the ordeal.
“Feels great to be out! Thanks for all the luv y’all showed a n—- #300,” he tweeted.
Keef, born Keith Cozart, was sentenced after a judge determined that he violated his probation by conducting an interview at a gun range in New York in June 2012. He had been ordered by a judge to have no contact with firearms.
After his release, Keef seemed to indicate that he was heading back to his old ways — at least in one facet of his return.
An Instagram photo was posted that appears to show him holding his fingers to lips, pretending to smoke a joint. Additionally, despite reports that the rapper had become more religiously focused while serving time and was considering baptismal after consulting a Chicago pastor, his grandmother seemed to indicate that that may no longer be the case. “That’s his old neighborhood pastor,” she told DNAInfo. “There’s no telling what he told Corey, and if he’ll do something different. But Keith’s little sister says she wants to go with him. And my oldest son says he wants to get baptized again, too. … We’ll see what Sunday brings us.”
His reps claimed during his incarceration that the experience changed him for the better and that he’s focused on staying on the straight and narrow. He was involved in numerous controversies since his emergence last year, many of which involved social media.
Keef is scheduled to get right back to work. He’s expected to perform at Ray Ban’s SXSW showcase in Austin, Texas, on Sunday, March 16.
