Twelve months ago, Kendrick Lamar left the 2012 SXSW as one of the top freshmen to watch in hip-hop. In 2013, it’s apparent that the Compton emcee has established himself as one of the top artists in hip-hop.
On March 15, Kendrick Lamar was the headlining act at the Mass Appeal stage at SXSW in Austin.
For a “rookie” Kendrick Lamar has an impressive catalogue due to the numerous mixtapes he released before his debut album, good kid, M.A.A.D. City. He entered the stage with “Westside Right on Time” and “F– Problems” before delving into older songs such as “A.D.H.D,” “P and Patron.”
But the highlight of the evening was Kendrick Lamar’s performance of songs from his debut classic. As he rapped “Money Trees,” “B–, Dant Kill My Vibe,” “Backseat Freestyle,” “Poetic Justice” and “Swimming Pools,” it was obvious that the entire audience knew every word to each song. From a larger standpoint, it proves that good kid, M.A.A.D. City will be remembered as a defining moment in hip-hop for this generation.
Guests of Kendrick Lamar included T.I., Ab Soul, Jay Rock and Schoolboy Q.
