How often did you practice and play when you were young?
I never had to really practice because it came naturally. I could always imitate what I heard. I initially started playing by ear and was able to duplicate whatever song I heard. As my career progressed, I began formal training.
When did you have your aha moment and learn that you were a good musician?
I was studying at DeKalb Tech for electronics when I got a call to go out on my first tour with Kelly Price. It was at that moment it really clicked, that this could be a career. The experience exposed me to another side of the business. The reality set in that I could honestly do this for a living and not just something to do when I have spare time.
Why is music education important to you?
I’m an advocate for helping young people to pursue their dreams. Music education changes the perception of music. It changes and forms the mind set of musicians allowing it to become a career path, which will open doors for them to study and further their craft.
