It’s been quite the remarkable past few days for LGBT rights with the revelation that GOP Sen. Rob Portman is publicly supporting same-sex marriage and his gay son, Will. And now former presidential candidate — and possible 2016 candidate — Hillary Clinton has released a video acknowledging her support for same-sex marriage as well.
In the Human Rights Campaign video, which hit the Web yesterday, Clinton said of the LGBT community, “LGBT Americans are our colleagues, our teachers, our soldiers, our friends, our loved ones. And they are full and equal citizens and deserve the rights of citizenship — that includes marriage.”
With her open-minded view of society, Clinton explains that it’s only right to support same-sex marriage.
“I support it personally and as a matter of policy and law, embedded in a broader effort to advance equality and opportunity for LGBT Americans and all Americans.”
In previous years, Clinton has only voiced her support of same-sex civil unions, but she explains in the video that time and experience have changed her opinion on the matter of marriage equality.
“Like so many others, my personal views have been shaped over time by people I have known and loved, by my experience representing our nation on the world stage, my devotion to law and human rights and the guiding principles of my faith,” said Clinton.
We commend Clinton for rising to the occasion, during this time of change in our society and not only acting as a part of it, but helping to lead the charge in pushing our nation to become a place of acceptance, unity and equal rights.
