The 2013 Sickle Cell Road Race/Walk, named the RRCA Southern Region 7K Championship, is open for registration at www.active.com. Featuring a challenging course, this annual event, hosted by the South Fulton Running Partners Inc., will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2013, 9:00 AM, at Welcome All Park in scenic College Park, Georgia. Runners can use their times in the Sickle Cell event for placement in the 2014 Peachtree Road Race.
Organized to benefit the Sickle Cell Foundation of Georgia, Inc., the Road Race/Walk was founded in 1979 by the South Fulton Running Partners. Thirty-three years later, it continues as a mainstay for the Foundation – attracting participants from across the U.S. Entry fees start at $25 for adults, $20 for youth (18 and under). Registrants are also encouraged to raise $100 by asking 10 people to sponsor their walk or run with a tax-deductible $10 donation. Current registration is available through Race Day with slightly higher entry fees.
This family-friendly race features a 7K run (4.3 miles) and a 4K walk (2.5 miles). Proceeds from this will benefit the Foundation to provide sickle cell testing, education and outreach programs – including Camp New Hope. Camp New Hope is the Foundation’s summer camp program for children with sickle cell disease, ages six to sixteen. The 2013 camp program will be held June 9-14 and registration is also available.
Sickle cell is a blood disorder passed from parent to child. Sickle cell disease can be painful and sometimes fatal. All persons of child-bearing age are urged to be screened for sickle cell. Testing is available at the Foundation Monday through Thursday by appointment.
The race kicks off at Welcome All Park, 4255 Will Lee Road, College Park, GA 30349. For race or sponsorship information contact the Sickle Cell Foundation of Georgia at (404) 755-1641. Major sponsors include: Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta; Fulton DeKalb Hospital Authority; Blue Cross Blue Shield of GA, and media partner WSB-TV.
