Hookah smoking has grown tremendously in the last decade. According to the American Journal of Public Health, the trend is growing fastest among college-aged students 18 to 24.
While hookah bars are opening across the nation, very few people understand the risks involved in smoking the flavored tobacco. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that smoking a hookah retains all the carcinogens of cigarette smoke, extra carcinogens from the use of burning coals while adding more carbon monoxide. A hookah user inhales 100 to 200 times the volume of smoke inhaled from a single cigarette. As a result, hookah smokers are at risk for the same cancers that are associated with smoking cigarettes.
