While “Iron Man 3” has not opened in the U.S. yet, its international debut has already raked in $195 million. That’s a bigger first overseas weekend than The Avengers, another Disney-Marvel superhero saga, which debuted to $185 million last summer. Iron Man 3 was ranked No. 1 in all 27 foreign markets in which it rolled out.
Here in the States, Michael Bay’s Pain &Gain, starring Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg took the No. 1 spot at the box office. The film, which cost around $25 million to make, has already made $20 million during its opening weekend.
The United Kingdom was the weekend’s highest-grossing country for Iron Man 3, with $21 million. Korea ($19 million), Australia ($18 million) and Mexico ($16 million) followed. It opens in China, which should be its biggest foreign territory, on Wednesday.
The first two Iron Man films earned $266 million and $311 million overseas respectively.
Iron Man 3, starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle will hit theaters in the U.S. on Friday, May 3.
