RuPaul offends Milton Berle
Every superstar has at least one major controversial moment. RuPaul’s came in 1993 at the MTV Video Music Awards where he and comic legend Milton Berle had a back-stage conflict that spilled over onto the stage when they presented an award together. RuPaul ad-libbed the line “So you used to wear gowns but now you’re wearing diapers,” referencing earlier comical drag days. RuPaul’s remark was criticized for breaking his “love everyone” message and later claimed that he could’ve handled it better, although he maintained that Milton was sexually inappropriate backstage.
