Nicki Minaj has no idea why Mariah Carey apparently can’t stand her.
From the moment the superstar rapper and iconic vocalist were put together as judges for this season of “American Idol,” things have been catty and tense. They blew up at each other during early season auditions in North Carolina, thinly (and not-so-thinly) veiled barbs are thrown between them during shows. Most recently, Carey dissed Nicki after she dismissed a contestant’s performance, only for Minaj to blast the singer via Twitter.
She called Mariah, “bitter and insecure.”
In an interview with “E!” Entertainment Television, Nicki was asked how things got so bad between them. According to the Young Money rapstress, she doesn’t really know where the vitriol came from.
“Imagine someone you loved your whole life. Imagine meeting them and then, all of a sudden, feeling like you did something horrible to them but you just don’t know what you did,” Minaj said to Ryan Seacrest. “That’s what my relationship with Mariah is and that’s what it’s been from the beginning. I just thought that we were really friends but that’s the other thing I learned. This industry is so fake. You walk away thinking people are your friends and they’re not.”
She also referenced the fact that she and Mariah have worked together previously, on Carey’s 2010 remix single “Up Out My Face.” While they admittedly don’t go back like babies and pacifiers, she did think that their history meant that they would have a good rapport.
“I came in to do ‘Idol’ really in my heart thinking that we were going to be the most fun judges of all time,” Minaj shared. “I was like, ‘I love Mariah. We’re going to be so good together ’cause we’re both funny. We’re crazy. We have a past relationship.'”
There are reports that none of the current four judges will be back next season, though nothing has been officially confirmed. When asked if she thought she would do “Idol” again, Nicki’s answer was vague.
“That’s the million dollar question,” she told Seacrest.
