When Ellen DeGeneres, and her character on her ‘90s sitcom, “Ellen,” came out as gay in 1997, The Walt Disney Company, ABC’s parent company, pulled several promotions for the series.  Rumors claiming that it was because they were uncomfortable with the gay story lines of the show.
