Earlier this week, fans across the nation were in an uproar when Will Smith claimed that his 14-year-old son, Jaden Smith, wanted to become emancipated from his parents. However, Smith and Jaden recently appeared on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and clarified the statement, saying it was more of a joke than truth.
Smith made the joke in a recent interview with The Sun, in which he claimed that his son wanted to be emancipated for his 15th birthday.
“He says, ‘Dad, I want to be emancipated.’ I know if we do this, he can be an emancipated minor because he really wants to have his own place, like ooh … That’s the backlash. On the other side, if kids just want to have command of their lives, I understand.”
But while chatting with DeGeneres, Smith’s young “After Earth” co-star explained that he’s not leaving the comfort of his parent’s home any time soon.
“The thing that people don’t get is everything at this house is free. So I can get anything and everything at his house. I’m going to be there 20, 30 more years. He [Will Smith] says as soon as I have a movie that’s bigger than one of his movies I can get my own house,” Jaden joked to DeGeneres.
Well, considering that Smith has been one of Hollywood’s biggest bankable film stars for over a decade now, Jaden has a long way to go before he can get his own place. But something tells us he really won’t mind waiting at least another decade to leave the nest.
