The CCA currently earns over $1 billion annually. But instead of investing in proper reform, the organization mostly invests in new prisons and bed capacity. In an “Annual Letter to Shareholders,” the CCA wrote “Prison facilities consist primarily of concrete and steel and don’t require the level of capital improvements as many traditional real estate properties. Therefore, prisons have economic lives much longer than traditional real estate properties.” Similar to slavery, prisoners are now worth billions.
