Jay-Z could have issues with the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA). According to reports, Jay-Z’s involvement with the recruitment of New York Jets Geno Smith to Roc Nation Sports is being investigated by the NFLPA.
Geno Smith, a rookie from West Virginia, fired his agent Jeff Nailey after the NFL Draft and eventually signed to Roc Nation Sports. Although Jay-Z handles the marketing side of the agency, which is in partnership with CAA, the Brooklyn rapper is not a certified agent yet. Kim Miale is an official agent for Roc Nation Sports.
Due to the NFL’s “runner’s rule,” a person who is not a certified agent with the NFLPA can not be involved in recruitment meetings. Smith recently posted a picture he took with Jay-Z on his Instagram account. The NFLPA discovered it and is now looking into Jay-Z’s relationship with Smith. There could be issues if Jay-Z played a prominent role in the meetings Smith held with Roc Nation.
A few months ago, Jay-Z sold his interest in the Brooklyn Net so that he could open Roc Nation Sports agency. The company has signed Skylar Diggins of the Tulsa Shock, Robinson Cano of the New York Yankees, and Smith of the New York Jets.
