Atlanta-based hip-hop heavy G.R.E.A.T. SCOTT lends his lyrical prowess to Fahamu Pecou’s “All Dat Glitters Ain’t Goals,” a fusion of art and sounds that simply challenges the images and perceptions portrayed by rappers seeking mainstream success.

Here, the artist who’s overcome a personal tragedy, ministers through rap and proselytizes for us to make our own success by following the beat of our own drum and staying true to our purpose.

What led you to art in general and to your art form in particular?
I’ve wanted to MC since I can remember [first] hearing hip-hop. My parents were original hip-hop heads with a tremendous record collection and a wide assortment of mixtapes that were played frequently in our house and in the car. … When I was in elementary school, I had the opportunity to meet several hip-hop artists because my teacher was also a radio personality. I met Chuck D. and received tickets to the “Bring The Noise Tour.” After seeing that concert, I knew definitively that I wanted to be an MC.

In addition to mastering their art, what other skill sets do you recommend that artists develop if they want to be successful?
Be original. Contrary to what record execs tell you, an original sound and style will always have more momentum and appeal than a copycat version of whats “hot” this quarter.

How do you map out your goals? How do you measure your success?
The first step is being specific. … Success is measured by what we accomplish. Not by what we obtain, but how our artistry impacts others.

Name two of your top role models: one in the art world and one from outside of it.
Chuck D. and real estate mogul H.J. Russell

What affirmations do you repeat to yourself that contribute to your success?
Comfort is the enemy of achievement.

What software, app or other technological innovation has made the biggest difference in your life and/or career?
Redfin and Loopnet apps.

Please define your personal brand.
A street ministry spiritualist and authentic representation of hip-hop culture.

What is your favorite vacation destination and why?
Salvador Bahia, Brazil. Music, culture, great food, powerful drinks, beautiful and appreciative people.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I would restore my ability to walk. I was shot at 18 and lost the ability to walk as a result.

What does it take to be iconic? In your estimation, who has achieved that status?
Impactful contribution. Bob Marley, Warhol, Michael Jordan, Marcus Garvey, Vanessa Del Rio.
