The Tony Awards nominations have been announced and The Trip to Bountiful has scored nominations for:
Best Revival of a Play
Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play – Cicely Tyson
Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play – Condola Rashad (daughter of Phylicia Rashād).
The highly acclaimed stage play by Horton Foote centers on Carrie Watts, portrayed by Emmy Award-winning actress Cicely Tyson. Watts is held somewhat of a prisoner in a cramped Houston apartment with her son, Ludie (Cuba Gooding Jr.) and her self-centered daughter-in-law (Vanessa Williams).
Watts manages to slip away from her son and daughter–in-law and takes a bus trip to Bountiful, a small town in Texas that she calls home. During her journey, Watts finds a companion in Thelma (Condola Rashad).
It is on the journey that Watts rediscovers herself and begins to awaken from the shell her living situation has forced her into.
