FX green-lights new animated series ‘Chozen’ about white gay rapper

Gays in hip-hop has been a hot topic over the past several months as big-name rappers have come out of the woodwork in support of marriage equality and LGBT artists, such as Frank Ocean. Now, hip-hop’s shift towards equality seems to have inspired FX’s new sister network, FXX, which will launch in September with an animated comedy about a white gay rapper, titled “Chozen.”

According to Shadow and Act, “Chozen” will center on a white gay rapper who leaves prison with “a new message and new skills, which he will use in his quest for redemption and domination,” read a press release about the show.

And the series already has a cosign from one of hip-hop’s greatest legends, Method Man, who will lend his voice to the show alongside fellow voice actors Grant Dekernion (Eastbound & Down), Bobby Moynihan (“Saturday Night Live”), Hannibal Buress (“Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell’), Michael Pena (“Gangster Squad”), Nick Swardson (“Parks and Recreation”),  and Danny McBride (“Eastbound & Down”).

“It’s great to be in business with Grant, Danny, Jody, David and Rough House and this is the perfect first series order for FXX,” said Nick Grad, the new president of original programming for FX Networks and FX Productions. “ ‘Chozen’ is an outrageous and ballsy comedy, but it’s also a very smart examination of the rap culture.”

“Chozen” will reportedly begin airing early next year.

We’re excited to see how this cartoon will be received by the viewing audience and we expect it to at least open up some much-needed dialogue about the presence of LGBT rappers in hip-hop. And, hopefully, it’ll provide some laughs along the way as well.

But this won’t be the first cartoon to feature an LGBT character. Check out some other famous and funny LGBT cartoon characters below. –nicholas robinson
