NYC students become ‘Science Genius’ through rap battles

A select group of NYC high schools are proving that hip hop plays a bigger part in our younger generation’s growth than anyone expected. Students took part in the program called Science Genius B.A.T.T.L.E.S. which encourages science education through a hip hop competition or rap battle. After the event, the participating schools who had not traditionally done well in science in the past, saw an increase in student participation and attendance, and a larger interest in AP Science classes. The educational concept was put in action by Columbia University’s Teachers College and Wu-Tang Clan member GZA.


What we are doing now is just showing what we know already exist,” said Chris Emdin, “Bringing hip-hop culture into the classroom and changing the game of education.
