‘Despicable Me 2’ movie review

Despicable Me 2
Stars: Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Miranda Cosgrove, Ken Jeong

The follow-up to the box-office smash Despicable Me is that rarest of sophomore films that surpasses the original — in nearly every way. It’s funnier, has an even scarier villain, and the soundtrack from the inimitable Pharrell Williams is immaculate. Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) is tapped by the Anti-Villain League to dispatch Eduardo/El Macho (voiced by Benjamin Bratt). Of course with Gru, nothing ever goes exactly according to plan, despite the fact that in his words, “Gru’s back in the game with cool cars, gadgets and weapons.”

At a sneak preview of the film in Atlanta, rolling out’s team of kid reviewers, ranging from age 6 to 11, said that the film was hilarious and that the 3-D effects were stellar. In what is obviously a ringing endorsement, they all said they plan to see the movie again when it’s released. –p.d. lee

Despicable Me 2 opens nationwide July 3.
