‘Pacific Rim’ movie review

Stars: Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day

The storyline in this apocalyptic tale is not new, nor is its computer-generated imagery; however, the scale of the invading alien monsters is unlike anything we’ve ever seen before. But the earthlings have an answer for the foreign marauders; human pilots who fight from inside ginormous robot bodies. All the giants stomping around, crushing everything in their path is enough to send the acrophobic to the therapist’s couch. Leading the pilots into battle is Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba), so not only will audiences get to see fighting on an Armageddon-like scale, they will also get to feast their eyes on Elba’s exquisite symmetry. And Elba’s British accent in the film is no affectation; he is, in fact, a native Londoner. –p.d. lee
