The heart-tugging Fruitvale, starring Michael B. Jordan as the martyred young adult murdered in cold blood on the Fruitvale Station of the San Francisco-Oakland subway station by a transit station cop, also opened up to big box office receipts, ranking in the Top Ten of the weekend as it pulled in nearly $5 million.
You knew the Ryan Coogler-directed drama was going to blow back audiences after it took home both the “Audience” and “Grand Jury Prize” awards at the Sundance Film Festival in suburban Salt Lake City this past January, arguably the world’s most prestigious film festival this side of Caanes Film Fest in the South of France.
Celebs, beginning with Academy Award-winner Octavia Spencer (The Help) and including the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Kerry Washington, Jamie Foxx and Miley Cyrus, urged urbanites — both The Y Generation as well as urban sophisticates — to go see the motion picture.
