A student at Georgia State University believes that white students need an organization defined by their race. According to reports, GSU freshman Patrick Sharp has created a group called the White Student Union. The student club received backlash after Sharp, a Birmingham native, begin posting flyers around the school.

Sharp responded by saying, “Are black student unions racist? Are Latino student unions racist? Are any of those other things racist? There’s really nothing about our union that separates us from them.”

However, the club is nothing but a front for racist views because Sharp also said, “If we are already minorities on campus and are soon to be minorities in this country why wouldn’t we have the right to advocate for ourselves and have a club just like every other minority? Why is it when a white person say he is proud to be white he’s shunned as a racist?”

Sharp may be too immature to understand the circumstances, but it does not forgive his severe ignorance. Although whites in America will be outnumbered once all minorities are combined, they will still hold on to the power structure that dictates so much in the country.

Sharpe wants to “celebrate white identity,” but it’s a culture that is celebrated every day in America.

GSU VP of student affairs, Doug Covey, said the group has a right to exist because freedom of speech is protected.
