Hip-hop artists had been winning Grammys for a decade before 1999, when the former Fugee took the genre to a higher plateau during music’s most famed ceremony. Hill won five Grammys–the most of any female artist at the time–including, Album of the Year. It was the first time a hip-hop artist had won the night’s biggest award.
