No. 7 Afrika Bambaataa and the Zulu Nation

A reformed gang leader with an expansive and visionary worldview, Bambaataa began recruiting b-boys, rappers, graffiti artists and deejays around the South Bronx in the 1970s in an effort to curb gang violence. He saw the burgeoning hip-hop movement as an opportunity to promote unity; with he and his “Zulu Nation” organizing block parties that gave young people an outlet for their creative energies.
