The 2013 Afropunk Festival took place this past weekend at Brooklyn’s Commodore Barry Park. The sights and sounds of alternative, rock, electronica, hip-hop, fusion jazz and soul made for another stellar year of music and culture. With optimal weather and enthusiastic crowds, Afropunk brought it’s free-thinking aesthetic and free-spirited vibe to the BK in grand fashion.
This year’s performers included everyone from Chuck D. (who took the stage with DJ Lord), punk pioneers Death gave a blistering performance of their far-too-underrated 70s work, and rock superstars Living Colour closed out the Sunday night slate of shows with gusto. Questlove and Prince Paul gave the crowd a high dose of classic hip-hop during their DJ sets, but there was no shortage of rappers performing throughout the festival, most notably Jean Grae and Danny Brown.
