Keshia Hunt named “Stand Up It’s Miller Time’s” national winner
A Texas comedian took home the crown during a national standup comic search. Keshia Hunt of Houston was dubbed “Stand Up It’s Miller Time’s” national champ this week after beating out finalists from Chicago, New Orleans and Atlanta. The petite comedienne brought the house down and wowed judges Marlon Wayans, Michael Blackson and Donnell Rawlings with her act that included an imitation of a relative and a paraplegic pimp . Hunt was awarded $10,000 for her performance and follows in the footsteps of comedians like Bernie Mac who previously won the competition.
Prior to judging the night’s competition, Marlon Wayans caught up with rollingout and shared his thoughts on what makes a great comedian.
“It’s so complex. To me, it’s beyond the laugh, what’s your story, what’s your pain?” said Wayans. “Can you animate all the characters? I want you to do like Richard Pryor, show me the joke as well. When you show me, how are you showing me? How are you using that microphone? How are you using that stage … A great comedian lives beyond the stage. You should be able to take that person and put them on a late night comedy show [or] in movies.”
Wayans is currently working on the movie “Haunted House 2” alongside Affion Crockett, Essence Atkins and comedian Gabriel Iglesias. The film will hit theaters March 2014.
