Dumped on a Cimmerian planet where it’s hoped that the alien predators who inhabit it will quickly dispatch him, Riddick (Vin Diesel) has defied the odds, in part because he can see in the dark. But Riddick is not just interested in survival, he wants to exact revenge against the people responsible for his plight. The bounty hunters who descend on the planet to take him out are in for a big surprise. So is the audience. This is a brooding, gloomy film that will send chills down your spine. You may even forget that it’s only a movie. Diesel is in his element as the burly, self-sufficient protagonist who can break people in half like twigs. Oh yeah, one more thing, don’t see Riddick if you’re afraid of the dark. –p.d. lee
