Fred and Maggie Blake née Manzoni (Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer) move to bucolic Normandy, France, courtesy of the witness protection program, taking along their smart-aleck and larcenous kids. The former Brooklynites find it difficult to keep a low profile, in other words, they can’t quite let go of their criminal habits, making it a cinch for the mafia assassins who are hot on their trail to track them down.
De Niro and the craggy-faced Tommy Lee Jones should have been teamed up a long time ago; let’s hope this won’t be the last time. Executive produced by Oscar-winning director Martin Scorcese, The Family has all the right stuff to win big at the box office. –p.d. lee
